Learning Outcome #2:
Possess In-Depth Knowledge of the Subject Area to be Taught
I obtained in-depth knowledge in my content area through the courses I took throughout my college career while pursuing my three degrees. While pursuing my associate’s degree in liberal arts and sciences, I found myself drawn to English courses. I took English courses spanning from poetry to fiction to women in literature to American literature, all of which ignited my interest in English. I then decided to pursue English as a major for my bachelor’s degree.
I continued developing my knowledge of English during the pursuit of my bachelor’s degree. I took many literature courses, including British literature from 1300 to the present, literature for adolescents, Shakespeare, satire, American women writers, literature of sports, American literature from 1800 to the present, and world literature. I also completed two writing courses that were related to literature. After completing these writing courses, I was better able to apply the English skills I had acquired in my literature courses.
My entire master’s degree has focused on classes that will enrich my abilities and skills as an educator. The literature classes I completed during the past two years include Arthurian literature, realism and naturalism, and Middle English literature. As a graduate student, I also completed several writing courses, including the composition process: rhetoric and analysis, research in the teaching of English, and language development in adolescence. Education courses were also part of my course of study for my master’s degree. Some of the education courses I took were computers and the study of English, teaching literature and critical literacy, and issues in foundations of education. I also completed two courses, which required fifty hours of classroom observations; one observation course took place in an eighth grade English classroom, and the other course took place in a twelfth grade English classroom.
I will be capable of teaching English, grades 7-12, knowing that my education has fully prepared me to be successful with students. The extensive background I gained from the various literature, writing, and education classes I have taken while pursuing my college degrees will prepare me as an English teacher because I will have a vast number of resources to access when creating unit plans for my own classroom.
